When a timber fence needs replacing rather than repairing

A fence that has one broken paling does not need replacing. A fence with posts that move when you push on it usually does, because the posts are the part carrying everything else.

• Posts that rock, lean or have rotted at ground level
• Rails that have dropped, split or pulled away from the posts
• Widespread paling failure rather than one or two damaged palings
• A fence that has been patched repeatedly and no longer holds a line
• Storm or impact damage across multiple bays

How replacement runs

Replacement is removal and installation in one job, which is why it is quoted as one job.

• The existing fence and its footings are removed and taken away.
• The boundary line is re-established before any new posts go in.
• New posts are dug and set 600mm deep with at least one full 20kg bag of concrete each.
• Rails and palings are fixed, and any gates are rebuilt to match.
• Old material is removed from site and the area is cleaned up.

Choosing what to replace it with

Replacement is the natural point to change style. A single paling fence can be replaced with lap & cap if privacy has become the priority, or with hardwood if the timber matters. It costs nothing extra to consider it at the measure, and it is far easier to decide before the posts are in.

Neighbours and shared boundaries

A boundary fence usually sits between two properties, so a replacement often involves both owners. Who contributes, which side the palings face, and what height and style go up are matters for the property owners to agree between themselves.
