What it is
A single gate uses one leaf to cover the whole opening, hinged on one side.
It suits openings that a single leaf can span without the gate becoming heavy enough to drop or drag over time.
Beyond a certain width a double gate is the better answer, because two smaller leaves are easier to hang, hold their line better and need less swing clearance each.

Built to match single paling, lap & cap, lapped only or hardwood single paling fencing, in the same timber and to the same top line.
What we work out on site
- The width of the opening, and whether one leaf can span it without sagging
- Swing direction and the clearance available for the gate to open
- The fall of the ground across the opening
- The weight of the leaf, especially in hardwood
- Whether the gate needs to be locked, and from which side
Hardware
- Hinges sized for the leaf weight, with adjustment available where possible.
- Gate posts sized and concreted to carry the load of a single wide leaf.
- Latches, locks and drop bolts fitted to suit how the gate is used.

Single Gates questions
When should I use a double gate instead of a single gate?
When the opening is wide enough that one leaf would be heavy and prone to dropping, or when there is not enough clearance for one long leaf to swing. Two leaves are lighter each and need less room.
Will a wide single gate sag?
Any gate leaf can drop over time if it is too wide and heavy for its hinges and posts. That is why the opening width, the timber and the hardware are considered together at the measure.
