What it is

A pedestrian gate is a single leaf gate sized for someone to walk through, usually onto a side path or into a back yard.

It is built from the same palings as the fence and finished to the same height and top line, so the gate reads as part of the fence rather than a separate item.

The opening width is set by the path or gap it has to serve, so it is measured on site rather than assumed.

Style and finish

Built to match single paling, lap & cap, lapped only or hardwood single paling fencing, in the same timber and to the same top line as the run it joins.

What we work out on site

  • Which way the gate should swing, and whether there is room for it to open fully
  • The fall of the ground under the gate, which sets the gap at the bottom
  • Whether the gate needs to be lockable, and from which side
  • Whether a self-closing gate is wanted or required for the situation
  • How much clearance is available on a narrow side path

Hardware

  • Hinges and latches are selected for the size and weight of the gate leaf.
  • Gate posts carry the swinging weight, so they are sized and concreted for the load rather than treated as ordinary fence posts.
  • Drop bolts, locks and self-closing hardware can be fitted where the situation calls for it.

Pedestrian Gates questions

How wide is a timber pedestrian gate?

Wide enough to walk through comfortably, set by the opening it has to serve. The width is measured on site rather than assumed, because side paths vary a lot.

Can a pedestrian gate match my existing fence?

If your fence is single paling, lap & cap, lapped or hardwood, a matching gate can be built in the same style and timber. Bring a photo of the fence to the site measure.

Can the gate be lockable?

Yes. Locks and latches are fitted to suit which side you need to secure and how the gate is used.
