Double Timber Gates

Two leaves meeting in the middle. The usual answer for a wide opening, and easier to hang and keep true than one long leaf.

What it is

A double gate splits the opening into two leaves that meet in the middle.

Because each leaf is roughly half the width, each one is lighter, easier to hang and less likely to drop than a single leaf spanning the same opening.

Each leaf also needs less room to swing, which matters where there is a wall, planting or a parked car close to the opening.

The pair is set out so the palings and, on a capped fence, the capping line run across the opening as one continuous face.

Style and finish

Built to match single paling, lap & cap, lapped only or hardwood single paling fencing. On a capped fence the capping line is carried across both leaves.

What we work out on site

  • Total opening width and how it splits between the two leaves
  • Swing direction, and clearance for both leaves to open fully
  • The fall of the ground across the opening, which affects the gap under both leaves
  • How the two leaves meet and latch in the middle
  • Whether a drop bolt is wanted to hold one leaf while the other is used

Hardware

  • Hinges sized for each leaf, with gate posts concreted to carry the load on both sides.
  • A drop bolt into the ground commonly holds one leaf closed while the other swings.
  • Latches, locks and stops fitted to suit how the gates are used day to day.

Double Gates questions

Why choose a double gate over a single gate?

For a wide opening, two leaves are each lighter and easier to hang than one long leaf, they hold their line better over time, and each leaf needs less clearance to swing.

How do double gates stay closed?

Usually a latch where the two leaves meet, with a drop bolt into the ground holding one leaf so the other can swing freely.

Can double gates match a lap and cap fence?

Yes. The gates are built lapped and capped so the capping line carries across both leaves and through the opening.
